What: ECO Iowa City Open House to share programs and project from 2009 and plans for 2010 with partner agencies and City of Iowa City departments and staff. Local Foods Connection will be here!

Grades 3-6 Program: Christmas Craft Fun the Recycled Way

What: Kids in Grades 3-6 will learn how to gift-wrap presents using recycled materials and create their own Christmas gift tags and bags. The Japanese art of furoshiki or cloth folding to wrap a gift will be demonstrated. Also, participants may bring in gifts to have gift-wrapped for free by library staff or do it themselves using materials provided by the library. Free. No Registration. Parents do not need to stay. Refreshments will be provided. Emphasis will be on eco-friendly ways to gift wrap Christmas presents and create unique packages. Co-sponsored by ECO Iowa City.

Green New Year’s Eve Party

What: Come make a green New Year’s Resolution and receive a green incentive for the New Year. There will be games, prizes, crafts, and refreshments for the kids in the Storytime Room. We will register your resolution so you can check back on April 22, 2010, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day!

With the $57,000 grant, ECO Iowa City will provide a series of opportunities for Iowa City residents, including hands-on workshops, programs and seminars to offer information and free resources, including:

* seed and start give-a-ways,
* coupons for free Iowa City Community Compost,
* free compact fluorescent bulbs and winterizing kits,
* subsidy for compost bin and rain barrel,
* free smart waste disposal events
