On Thursday, August 12th Food & Water Watch will be in Iowa City after visiting the Iowa State Fair! That evening, celebrity Chef Rocky Barnette will be featured at the monthlyGreen Drinks Iowa City at The Red Avocado and will be speaking about the Farm Bill campaign. Rocky, alongside Food & Water watch, is hoping to reach out to local activists and extend this invitation to them in order to gain support for their campaign.
Food & Water Watch is a a nonprofit organization with offices based in Washington DC that works to ensure clean water and safe food in the U.S. and throughout the world. They promote and advocate for sustainable and secure food systems, public control of water resources and conservation, and policies that maintain the environmental quality of the ocean and its resources.
Food & Water Watch is calling for a revision of the Farm Bill in Congress in 2012 that will include measures to protect farmers against the lack of competition caused by big agribusiness. Their Farm Bill campaign is just getting launched, so while organizers in their office are calling groups around the country to get their support, their Education and Outreach team is planning a road trip through America’s heartland to reach out directly to the people most affected by these issues. Food & Water Watch will be accompanied by celebrity chef and foodie activist Rocky Barnette who, as the face of the road trip, will be visiting farms, county fairs, farmer’s markets, and more to educate people on their campaign. They are also going to be collecting petition signatures at these events that they will drop off at the respective Senators’ offices before leaving each state.
As one of the last events of their trip, Food & Water Watch also hopes to share highlights from their travels and celebrate their outreach achievements. Come to the Red Avocado August 12th to support the campaign and local Iowa farms!
