As The Crow Flies, owned and operated by Joanne Nelson, is in its fifth year (2004) of selling chickens for sale direct to families in Southeastern Iowa. Joanne grew up on a farm near Lincoln, Nebraska, where she developed her love for animals. She has a B.S. in Agriculture. Joanne and her family settled on a 35 acre farm outside of Solon seven years ago. Her goal is to live self-sufficiently. She also raises free-range turkeys, guinea fowl, Muscovy ducks and chickens for eggs and has a bio-dynamic garden.

Joanne raises her broilers in a healthy environment, which includes: Certified organic feed containing no genetically modified grains, growth promoters, hormones or antibiotics; chicken tractors on non-treated grass in the fresh air and sunshine. Joanne will have chickens available for delivery on four dates this year, from June through September. The chickens cost $2.50 per pound and weigh approximately four pounds each. Demonstrations on how to cut up whole chickens are available upon request.

"The best way to rebuild a connection to food is to know your local farmers and to purchase the products they raise. You'll discover the simple, elegant philosophy that underlies organic farming. And you'll understand why spending food dollars with local farmers is a wise investment. The impact of each individual purchase may feel insignificant, but the combined effect is profound." --Nell Newman
