10,000 Hours Show
In late April of 2004, thousands of volunteers will join together in
Iowa City for a night of music and celebration culminating a yearlong
commitment to volunteerism: The 10,000 Hours Show. It is the first event
of its kind: a concert for which no tickets will be sold. Instead, every
member of the audience "buys" a ticket by contributing their
time and talent to a participating Johnson County organization. Collectively,
the audience of the show will represent Tens of Thousands of Hours of
volunteer service!
Although any volunteer receives credit towards entrance to the show,
the 10,000 Hours group is focused on involving University of Iowa students
in community organizations. Adopt-A-Family has met some of the show's
talented, energetic and humble organizers, and already has benefited
from 6 hours of volunteer work from UI students! The students volunteered
on one of our CSA farms late this fall, cleaning up the fields for the
winter. Not only are we glad to give these young people the experience
of working on a sustainable, small family farm, AAF will receive credit
toward the purchase of a CSA share this spring for their work! We hope
to get more volunteers out to farms in late winter/early spring, weather
permitting.
In addition, AAF's other student volunteers, recruited through the
2003 UI Community Service Fair or the AAF web site, can use their volunteer
hours toward the show entrance. If you would like to volunteer for Adopt-A-Family
through this program, contact L Dowd at (319) 338-2010. To learn more,
